Competence Network Diabetes Mellitus  

The German Diabetes Health Report 2011 by diabetesDE states that, twelve percent of all Germans aged between 20 and 79 years are suffering from diabetes - approximately 90 to 95 percent of them are affected by type 2 diabetes. Five to ten percent are suffering from type 1 diabetes. This renders Germany the country with the  highest rate of  diabetes in Europe.

Thise data demonstrates the urgent need for research and science on this chronic disease.
Therefore, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the governmental program "Health Research: Research for People" supports seven network consortia and its 25 sub-projects. With the help of basic research projects, clinical and epidemiological studies and health service analysis, the members of the network hope to improve the knowledge regarding prevention, treatment and development of diabetes mellitus.
