Seven research consortia with 24 projects have been selected for funding within the competence network diabetes mellitus:

1. Future Pediatric Diabetes (FPD)
2. Translational Research on the Early Pathogenesis and Prevention of Young-onset Diabetes (TREPPYD)
3. Advance Knowledge for Restoration of Beta Cells and Diabetes (AKROBAT)
4. Metabolomics / neue Biomarker
5. Diabetes-Collaborative Research of Epidemiologic Studies (DIAB-CORE)
6. Diabetes and Mental Aspects (DIAMANT)
7. Depression and cognition in diabetes. From neurobiological mechanisms to treatment strategies (DECODIA)

With these consortia and projects the competence network spans the fields of research from basic science via clinical and epidemiological studies to patient care and health economics. Due to pathogenic relations between diabetes and obesity the two competence networks for diabetes and obesity have established a close cooperation. 

Funding of the competence network is scheduled for 12 years. After the initial three years intentions are to increase yearly funding and to integrate new projects into the network.
